What Mississippi taught me about public health…

When I received the call from my university informing me of my selection for an internship in Vicksburg, Mississippi, I was eager to embark on this new journey. Having just emerged from a challenging relationship, I recognized that this transition would facilitate the healing I ultimately experienced. This relocation not only provided foundational healing but also introduced me to numerous invaluable experiences. However, before delving into those, I would like to share the lessons I learned from Mississippi. Mississippi revealed to me that beyond the river, countless stories await discovery. My office was situated right on the banks of the Mississippi River, in a truly picturesque setting. In fact, I had the opportunity to work in three or four different locations throughout Mississippi. I witnessed a great deal, gained extensive knowledge, and had numerous experiences. Most notably, one constant about Mississippi is its enduring nature. The residents continue to enjoy sweet tea, cold Coca-Cola, and indulge in fried foods that are undeniably unhealthy, yet they seem content with their lifestyle. I doubt they would wish for any changes, and although my intention was to influence them, it was, in fact, I who underwent transformation. I came to understand that it is perfectly acceptable for individuals to choose to live in such a manner. Consequently, after years of effort, we eventually relocated to Florida, which encapsulates the lesson Mississippi imparted to me: you can lead a horse to water, but you cannot force it to drink.
